Our Mandate

The Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) leads Sierra Leone’s national agenda for building a competitive, diversified, and private sector–driven economy. Our mandate spans policy formulation, investment facilitation, market regulation, enterprise support, and consumer protection — ensuring that businesses operate within an enabling environment that encourages innovation, fair competition, and sustainable growth. In fulfilling this role, MTI strengthens the institutions that anchor trade and industry, supports the emergence of resilient domestic value chains, and safeguards the rights and welfare of consumers nationwide.

Through our strategic programmes and partnerships, MTI drives Sierra Leone’s integration into regional and global markets, expands opportunities for exporters, and promotes the growth and formalisation of micro, small, and medium enterprises. We serve as the Government’s principal interlocutor in bilateral, regional, and multilateral trade negotiations, ensuring that national interests are protected while unlocking new pathways for economic cooperation. MTI also provides leadership and oversight to specialised agencies that maintain quality standards, promote local content, regulate key industries, strengthen cooperatives, and advance industrial development — collectively supporting a dynamic and inclusive economic future for Sierra Leone.
